This week Super-Intern David Schagerström and I worked on submission for the GSG 5 Second Project, and man was it fun.
With the brief being ‘Nothing But Cubes’, we decided to not focus on just cubes, but to make the cube the vehicle for our scene (besides having low-poly geometry with low phong angles to show the quads, nice little subtext).
This was also a great project for David to learn some more C4D in-depth with a fast turnaround – I highly recommend taking advantage of competitions such as the 5 Second Project to establish teamwork, develop workflows, and have some care-free fun.
We both worked on the 3D, David’s focus was on the character development & animation (he learned how to rig, woohoo!) and he helped out with some of the Winter scene. My role was in scene and environment modeling, shading and animation, and then to top it off we both worked on the sound.
Here’s a making of – all the movements of the hero character were rigged & animated, most of the scene elements were animated using Mograph and Effectors with Linear Falloff. Minor details (water displacement, fire) were achieved via Random Effectors affecting Points.
Things have been busy work-side so I haven’t posted in a while, but cool stuff has been developing.
Among these was the creation and launch of De Tien Van 2012, which is Dutch for The 10 of 2012. SuperHeroes was approached by the Openlucht Musem to make an online campaign to promote the 100 year anniversary of said museum. The concept developed by Arjen Noordeman and Rogier Vijverberg was to release an interactive trailer in which you see two characters walking through a museum exhibit that hosts 10 items from 2012, and people have no idea what they’re for.
My role was VFX Supervisor as well 3D modeling/animation, along with some compositing. There were time constraints, and we basically had 7 days to make all the assets, matchmoving, lighting, texturing, grading, etc… Also important to note that we were working at 2K resolution, so render times were long and unforgiving – something that was somewhat daunting but with good pre-pro as well as our in-house renderfarm wasn’t as bad as it could have been. Also important to note that our new intern, David Schagerström was in it for the long haul and was a great help – kudos, young squire.
We also did some HDR Spherical Panoramas to get the reflections right. While we didn’t have time to get a proper HDR Probe, we improvised with what we could find and got pretty good results. A mix of the footage being shot on the Red camera and grading Red Raw footage, along with rendering the 3D objects with Linear Workflow made for quick and accurate color styling & matching. All in all, for a 7 day turnaround & delivery it was successful, not to mention we got this great Making Of out of it:
